Modesto Relays Recap

While the pole vault might have received the headlines in the newspapers, Athenian Athletics put on a good show in the assortment of events we competed in during the 67th Annual California Invitational Relays—formally the Modesto Relays.

In the men’s pole vault, there was a six-way tie for first place with a height of 17-02.75 with club member Derek Mackel being one of the six. Justin Norberg, Robert McClean, Yoo Kim, Dustin Deleo and Paul Litchfield all shared the honor of winning the event with Mackel.

During the 4x100m relay, USA Red won the event with a time of 39.01 followed by HIS 39.85 and USA White 40.92. Athenian Athletics took fifth with a time of 41.40.

Carlos Moore put on a show during the men’s 100m dash with an impressive time of 9.97 on his way to winning the event followed by Mike Rodgers 10.06 and Tyrone Edgar 10.11.

Starr Roberts ran 10.69 after winning both the 100m and 200m in last weeks Peyton Jordon Invitational. Will Montgomery (10.72) also competed.

Aaron Thigpen (10.96) won the Masters 100m-dash followed by Jeff Williams (11.31).

Tyler Christopher won the men’s 200m dash with a time of 20.55 followed by Mickey Grimes (20.67) and Ryan Bailey (20.69). Roberts took 8th with a time of 21.42 with Leo Settle placing 10th with a time of 21.53.

Montgomery (21.87), Aaron Thigpen (22.47), Ryan Fitzpatrick (22.59), Cameron Brockmon (23.43) also competed in the field.

Chris Coffey came in with a jump of 6.33m for the club during the men’s long jump. Trevell Quinley won the event with a jump of 8.00m followed by Chris Gillis (7.87m) and Tony Allmond (7.86m).

Other Modesto tidbits:

- Khadevis Robinson won the event for the sixth year in a row with a time of 1:47.32.

- Jenn Stuczynski cleared 15-5 inches to set a meet record.

- Giovanni Lanaro went 19-0.25 which defeated a field of 2004 Olympic Champ Tim Mac and Olympian Derek Miles.
