Kent Bernard brings experience gained at his former position as Assistant Coach of the University of Michigan Men 's Track and Field team to Athenian Athletics. Bernard proved to be an incredible asset, coaching athletes in the sprints and hurdles. As a former athlete for the Wolverines during the mid-1960's, Bernard had a sparkling collegiate career and a competed alongside current U of M coach Jack Harvey. Bernard captured Big Ten titles in the 440-yard dash at the 1964 and 1965 conference championships and collected two 600-yard indoor titles, as well. Bernard also achieved international recognition, as the Trinidad native raced to the bronze medal at the 1964 Olympic Games and earned Silver medals at the 1966 and 1970 Pan-American Games. In addition to running on a world record-setting mile relay squad, Bernard held the Wolverine 400-meter dash record for 21 years. Following his graduation from Michigan in 1966, Bernard continued to race competitively and coached the Ann Arbor Track Club. He joined the Wolverine coaching staff in 1978. |
